Our support for ‘Together’
This Sunday marks the 72nd birthday of the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. It’s fitting on many levels.
As an institution which for so long has wrapped its arms around UK society as a whole, offering healthcare to everybody, it’s a reminder that we can and should all look beyond the differences and divides currently bubbling up around us and appreciate the power of our entire human community.
Beyond this, it provides a pivotal moment to reflect on the situation we have all gone through recently. The global coronavirus pandemic has impacted billions of people since the start of this year. Many have sadly lost their lives or have been heavily impacted longer-term.
Beyond reflection, it’s also a time to be thankful. Thankful to all the healthcare heroes and support workers, not only in the UK but across the world who have continued to fight the virus tirelessly, providing care and support for so many who have fallen ill.
We were recently approached by ‘Together’, an independent coalition of businesses aiming to close divisions and inequalities, bridge divides and help build a kinder, more connected country. Though an initiative based in the UK, it was a sentiment we felt could be recognised and appreciated globally.
Peter, our Founder and CEO recently signed an Open Letter. Please do read it.
An extract is below: “While the roles that we can play will be different, the outcomes we seek are the same: a closer connected society where we know each other better, are better able to support each other and where we build caring communities in which we all feel we belong. We hope that that will become one of the positive legacies of the devastating virus.”
For those of you who are based in the UK, two things are taking place in the coming days:
Saturday 4th July - Together is asking everybody to place a candle in the front window of their property in a national sign of remembrance for those who have already lost their lives to Covid19.
Sunday 5th July - (5pm) - the NHS’s 72nd birthday. A national moment to stand in your street to clap and show your support for all those carers and support workers who have helped lead us through this difficult time.
Many of our Trusties will be supporting the cause and if you’re reading this, we hope you do too.
Please feel free to watch this video below:
Thank you you for joining us in our celbration of 'Together.' An ICM poll indicated that on Sunday 5th July, 28% of of adults in Great Britain took part in the national moment to stand and clap in support for all those carers and support workers who have helped lead us through this difficult time. This equates to 14.3 million people.
